Seizure Rash

Emily's 14th birthday was marked by a morning seizure with a large rash. This has been happening for the last six months. She has a rash during the seizure, not before, not after. This was the largest rash to date. It not only covered her neck but all the way down her torso.

Lamictal is said to cause rashes but I don't think that is the culprit since she isn't rashing at any other time. It seems to be seizure triggered. I scoured the internet and can't find anyone who has this same problem.

At first I thought she was allergic to the Valium given for the seizure. However, we stopped the Valium and gave Chloral Hydrate for the seizure and it still happened. Now it happens with almost every seizure before the rescue medication is given. As soon as the seizure starts, she rashes up, and it doesn't go away till the seizure is done.

If anyone out there has symptoms like this I'd love to talk with you about it.

I have never seen or heard of this! It seems so weird - that a seizure would cause a rash.

I'd love to know if you find an answer to it.

What does the rash look like? My son just had a seizure and a red "mapping" kind of capilary rash (under the skin, not above) popped up on his neck, arms, upper chest and a little on his legs. I can't find anything regarding a reaction like that. Thank you! I wish you luck with your daughter!

Hi Beth, I looked and looked and I also could find nothing on a seizure rash. Emily still does it, though not all the time. The neuro thinks it just has to do with the brain's excitement.

I was curious if anyone had found anything more about the rash/seizure combo? My friend said that she has been getting rashes on her upper chest, neck, shoulder blades and some on her legs and feels horrible when it happens and then this past sunday the rash appeared and then she had a seizure which involved her whole body, foaming at the mouth and loss of consciousness for at least 7-8 minutes... She was in the hospital for 3 days and was just released with no diagnosis.

We are actually coming to the conclusion that the rash is from stress/brain excitement. She continues to get this rash just before a seizure starts, but she is now getting this rash when she is nervous or stressed at a medical appointment.

Hi my name is Esther,
My 15 yr. old son had a grand mal seizure last night and I noticed that he also has a rash on his back. The rash is no where else, he was not started on any medication. He never had a history of seizures either. So I've been searching the internet for any correlation but can't find any. It's been over 24 hours since the seizure and the rash is getting worse but still only on his back. Any ideas why?

Norma, You should probably call your doctor right away. In our case we found out that she gets the rash before the seizure and then once it is done the rash goes away.

My 19 month old son Stephen just started a "new" kind of seizure, where it seems like he is shivering. When he gets these, his face gets a rash on it, then it goes away (or the whole face gets red) once he is done. Nice to see that other people get the same thing.

Terry - thanks for the note. We can see now when she is going to have a seizure as she starts to get red in the face or arms before it comes on. At this point sometimes it just looks red and sometimes looks like a blotchy rash.

Hi, I have an adult son with epilepsy. Lately, every time he has a seizure, he breaks out in a rash. I was scouring the internet looking for ansers and found your post.
You are not alone, I too am searching for annsers

Yesterday my 15 year old daughter had seizure like activity and had a bright red rash along her hairline going down her back. It went away shortly after she regained consciousness. This happened while at school. When I got to the ER her rash was gone. She never has had a seizure before. The ER doctor released her without giving us a reason for her episode.

She's still doing it 2 years after this post. The rash had changed a bit and started going down her arm. We were almost fooled again in the last couple of months by, "Oh my she has a rash", because it was so distended and had sort of pustules like an allergy rash. But the minute the seizure was over the rash was gone.

My 12 years old (also called Emily) has facial red spots the day before a seizure. BTW, she suffers seizures at night only, exclusively. Maybe twice or three times a month. However the day before a seizure, she displays rashes on the right hand side of her face. We know then that she will have a seizure that night. It could be heat-related, when it's too warm or something. She used to suffer febrile seizures as well. Good luck.
