Conversations with Grace

HPIM1646a

One day Grace was asking me if I was going to grow taller.  I told her “no”  because I was older than 50, and people who are older than 50 are over-the-hill and they start getting smaller instead of taller.

Today Grace asked me, “Mom, when’s your birthday?”

I told her.  Then she asked, “How old are you?”

I told her I am 51.  “Oh, so you’re getting shorter now.”

And then she just walked away, pondering my height (though not much of it to ponder).

That's so cute!

Michelle, I meant to ask you--Grace is younger than the traditional braces age, right? I have an 11-year-old, Hannah (SCH) who really needs braces. Debating about whether she's too young. What are the arguments for doing that at a younger age?

Grace started braces when she turned 8, a little early because her teeth weren't growing in properly. They were coming in sideways and were already squished. So she got a roof expander to widen her mouth, and also needed to get her front tooth straightened because it was way up and sideways. It was not coming down on its own. The orthodontist told us that we could do it now and get her mouth straight with just a little maintenance on it later, or wait till later (teen years) and it would be much more difficult to get her teeth straight. So we chose to do it now instead of later. I've seen a few other young kids in the orthodontist clinic. Grace will be 9 next month. She gets her braces off in November and then will use a retainer to keep her teeth in line.
